Sarnıç Konak began as a two-storey stone house built for a Greek olive oil merchant, on a lane between Alaçatı's vineyard houses and its market. The name means the cistern house, after the cistern beneath the courtyard. Rainwater still gathers there, and we use it to water the garden.

Restoration began in 2016 and took three years. We mixed the old lime mortar by hand, took down the timber ceilings board by board and numbered each one, and left the tiles where we found them. Rather than add rooms, we took some away. There are fourteen now, each with its own window and its own breeze.

Stone walls, linen sheets, handmade tiles. Every room has air conditioning and a rain shower, and breakfast is always included. Rates are per night for two guests.

Selin, our concierge, knows every cove on the peninsula. We arrange each of these a day ahead, and if the weather turns, we move it to another day at no charge.

A beginners' lesson on the shallow, flat water of Alaçatı Bay. The steady afternoon northerly is kind even to people standing on a board for the first time.

Kitchen

Breakfast goes on until noon.

Bread out of the oven at seven, fresh curd cheese from Germiyan, wild greens cooked with egg and Ayşe Hanım's mastic jam. Our kitchen is small and our suppliers are close by. We know most of them by name.

Before you arrive

If your question isn't answered here, write to us. We usually reply within the hour.

Check-in is from 2pm and check-out by 11.30am. If the rooms allow, we are happy to arrange an early arrival or late departure at no extra cost. If your room isn't quite ready, leave your bags with us and have a coffee in the courtyard.

Of course. Children under six stay free in their parents' room. We can add an extra bed in the Garden Room, the Loft and the House Suite. The pool is 1.4 metres deep, and we keep children's life jackets at reception.

We welcome dogs up to 10 kg in the Garden Room, which has its own walled garden. There is a cleaning charge of €20 per night, and we provide the bowls and food.

İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB) is 85 km away, about an hour by road, with direct flights from much of Europe in summer. We can send a private driver for €85 each way. If you hire a car, note that our lane is closed to traffic in summer: guests park free at a car park 150 metres away, and we bring your luggage to the door.

Cancel up to 14 days before arrival and we refund you in full. After that, we charge only for the first night. Our rates are in euros, and you can pay by card in euros or Turkish lira.

Six of our rooms stay open from December to March. The pool closes, but the hammam, the sitting room with its fire and breakfast carry on as usual. At weekends in winter we ask for a minimum stay of two nights.

Letters from the house

We write four times a year, as the seasons turn.

The grape harvest, the first good surfing wind, the last week before we close for winter. No barrage of offers, we promise.
